Single Template for two page layout

I wanted to share with you a fun technique I used to create a two page layout the other day.

I love how this turned out because they look coordinated but unique and they look nice together and separately. So how did I create it?

1. I found a template that I wanted to use:

I thought this would be a great layout for a two pager, because the background papers go off the edge of one side of the layout.

2. I opened the layout in PSE. You see how the original layout has the papers going off the left side? It was going to be the right side of my two page layout. So I saved it as the title I wanted for that page. Then I went to "Image - Rotate - Flip Horizontal." This flipped the whole template right to left. I saved this as the name for my left hand page.

3. Then I needed to open the right hand page so that I now had both templates open.

4. I added my pictures.

5. I added papers. As I did this, I made sure that I was adding the same background papers to each page. For the other papers I did some the same and changed some up also.

6. I did the same with the elements - some the same, some different. One awesome thing about elements this way is that I can add them to one layout. Resize them. And then drag them from one layout to the other so that they are the same size on both layouts.

Challenge Time

I'm hosting a challenge at Digital Scrapbooking Classes.

This month, you are challenged to create something based on the theme "Then and Now." I'm creating 3 layouts - one for each of my darling kiddos - to hang on the wall in our play room. Here is my first:

I absolutely love the layout that GraceLikeRain did with this! Check out how you used a square frame around the picture to really make it pop. And here also is an old layout that I made this template from.

Just wanted to share with you a couple of layouts I've made recently that I really love. :)

First up is one from back when Michael turned 5 1/2. He LOVES getting a half birthday cake.

Then up is a two pager I did. I really loved this kit from WM[squared]. I couldn't wait to scrap this layout. The picture on the right side is my favorite picture from a day this fall when my whole family got together. There are 6 grandkids on that side of the family currently and we have gotten some very cute pictures of them over the year. However, it was not to be this day. My husband Tim was in charge of gathering them all together while we all stood waiting with cameras. At one point or another all six were crying. Here he got 5 gathered - you can see #6 leaving the shot and the look on his face is just priceless!

Using Picasa for Organizing

Thanksgiving Hybrid

I was inspired by this Thankful Tree:

However, we have a fairly small table, so I was pretty sure with all the food on the table, there simply would not be room for a center piece for Thanksgiving. So instead we made it into a mobile from kitchen light. I printed out papers from my favorite fall kit by Shawna Clingerman - Colorfall.

Then we cut them into what I meant to be easy leaves, but my boys decided were more like feathers. On the back we wrote things we were thankful for and we hung them with fishing wire. I think it turned out cute and the kids had so much fun with it.

Some highlights:
Michael is thankful for sports, Jesus, seasons, and uncles.
Jon is thankful for our house, Michael, and Becca.
I am thankful for the Bible, my husband's job, and washing machines.

What do you do with a sheet of alpha?

There are many times in digital scrapbooking when you will find a sheet of alphabet letters or a sheet with a combination of different elements. However, you won't want to put the whole sheet on your layout, so what do you do?

11 Things and a FREEBIE

So did you notice that last week, November 11 was 11/11/11? I was talking about it with my six year old son and he was fascinated. So while I hadn't originally planned anything special for the day, we decided to set out to take 11 pictures of the things we did that day. It turned out to be a fun "Day in the Life" project. I blogged about it on my personal blog if you would like to read the details of the day. And then I scrapped a page about it that I think turned out pretty cute if I do say so myself.

I've also gone back a few years to scrap some pictures from years gone by. The quality of the pictures is pretty bad compared to what I'm use to now with my great camera, but the memories are still wonderful.

Starting Perfect Pictures Class

After I had been digi scrapbooking for a couple of years I started getting frustrated with my layouts – they simply were not as fabulous as I wanted them to be. I did some gallery browsing and pulled up some layouts that I loved and studied them. I realized that the pictures on those layouts were stunning and that mine were fairly bland. So I looked into what I could do to get better pictures. I settled on three things: 1)Buy a better camera (mine was ancient). 2)Work on my composition. 3)Learn to edit my photos in PSE and actually spend some scrapping time working on the pictures.

The first I can't help you with – you might need to do some saving up on your own. The second is still not a specialty of mine but I'm working on a few tutorials and also hope to link you up to some great help in the free member and class subscription areas, so stay tuned. The third option, though, is going to be covered in Perfect Pictures - our Featured class this month!

We will be digging deep into many different sections of PSE to work on making our photos simply gorgeous to fit in on our amazing layouts! I just posted the first part of lesson 1 this morning. It will walk you through how to use many of the different aspects of the Enhance menu. We will look at lightening shadows, brightening pictures, working with levels and curves, chancing the picture to black and white, altering the color and tone of pictures, and more. It is really going to be too much information to take in all at once, but you can pick a few things at a time to play with and practice. The more you practice, the faster and more natural it will become and you will be able to make your photos shine in no time!

Here are a couple of the pictures that I used in this first lesson:

I tried some hybrid!

So I so wanted to hang up an autumn picture in my house. So I used these great pieces from the November Mix a Kit at ScrapMatters by geniaBeana Scraps and created a great layout.

First can I tell you how much I love her dotted cardstock!!

So after I created the layout I decided that I didn't want to wait for it to print an ship back to me. Instead I dragged each piece onto 8.5x11 sheets that I printed at home. It was a bit of work to cut them out, but it was kinda fun to work on something other than the computer with my hands. :) And I love how it turned out. Check it out!

Introducing Perfect Pictures

Ever heard about your photo's curves and wondered what they were? Or have you seen those black and white pictures with splashes of bright color on them and wanted to try it out?

In November our featured class at Digital Scrapbooking Classes is Perfect Pictures!

Photoshop Elements was initially designed and marketed as software to edit pictures with. There are so many powerful and easy to use tools in PSE to fix up your pictures and make them shine for sharing with family or putting on your scrapbooking layouts.

Week 1: We will begin by taking a look at the Enhance menu. You will learn about levels and curves as well as altering the lighting and color of photos many different ways. We will look at fixing red eye and changing pictures into black and white.

Week 2: The second week takes us to the Effects Palette. Here we will look at layer styles and photo effects that can do all sorts of fun things to our pictures. You will learn how to create a sepia effect, tint photos, and many other fun tricks. We will end the week looking at how to install and use additional actions.

Week 3: This week we will focus on filters and adjustment layers. We will add texture to our photos and look at the benefits of adjustment layers and masks when editing photos. One trick you will learn this week is how to create a black and white image with a section of the picture still in color.

I hope that you will have a blast playing with your pictures in this class an will be inspired to scrap more because of it.

Cutting Paper Letters

For those of you who paper scrap or use to, did you ever have fun cutting fun pattern papers into letters for a title or accent on your layout? Do you miss using your scissors when you digi scrap? Well, there is no need to now. Did you know you can cut digital paper into letter shapes? I just posted a lesson about it in our class subscription section of Digital Scrapbooking Classes!

Two Halloween Layouts

I had the privilege of working with this awesome kit from two fabulous designers.

You will also want to check out the bundled option as it comes with templates, alphas, and gorgeous dot paper.

Any way, here are the two layouts I created. I'm going to be putting out a template based on the second one so you will want to stay tuned for that announcement too.

Both of these layouts use very old pictures. The first is from 2006 and was my son's first trick or treating experience. I loved the dark pictures of him in that skeleton costume. In fact I found this great video we took that night where you basically just see the skeleton with his hands and face attached - so super cute. He just wandered up and down the street that night, not really interested in going up to houses for candy. lol

The second layout is from 2007 when our church did a Harvest Party for Halloween. We had a huge pile of pumpkins that sat right in the middle of the sanctuary for people to pick from and tons of games around the edges.

Floating Docs and Resizing For Web

I'm happy to announce that I'm starting a new series of tutorials in the Free Member section of the forum on setting up preferences in Photoshop Elements.

I just put the first two up today:

Floating Documents: In the newest versions of PSE, the default view for documents in your work space area is to have them all open together with tabs that allow you to view each one at a time. I prefer to have "Floating Documents" so that I can see multiple documents open in the same area. Here is how to do that.

Resize and Save Layouts For Uploading Online: There are many ways to do this, but let me walk you through my favorite method or resizing, sharpening, and saving a layout to make it ready to share on the web.

I am so excited to be teaching a new class this month over at Digital Scrapbooking Classes. I wanted to take a minute to share with you all of the many cool things that this class will be covering.

Week 1:

We will be looking at a large list of tips of techniques around using the text tool. We will look at how to manipulate text boxes, how to better view fonts, and how to use text on a path (both with the new tools in PSE 10 and in older versions). We will also talk about finding and installing fonts this week.

Week 2:

Week 2 is all about word art. There are so many amazing pieces of word art out there that you can add to your layouts. However, the options get even more extensive if you know how to alter the word art to fit the needs and look of your layout. So this week we will start by learning many tricks for altering word art. We will change the color both of the whole and of just sections. We will alter the size of words within the art an change there positions. Basically, with the skills from this lesson you will be able to customize almost any word art you find. We will end the week by learning how to create your own word art from scratch, including some tips for making it easier to get just the right look!

Week 3:

Week three will be focused on effects to use with the text. These tricks will often be used for creating titles for your page. We will learn to make our own alphas, cut letters out of paper, and use the effects in PSE to create fun text effects. We will then end the week with some fun examples of putting all of our new skills together into some gorgeous layouts! There will even be a special template for constructing fun alphas for your pages included this week.

Customizing Shadows in PSE

Do you ever get frustrated with the lack of customization PSE offers when adding shadows? I've been researching and playing around with some fun tricks and work arounds for this!

I'm writing lessons in using shadows in PSE for our class at Digital Scrapbooking Classes. I just finished and uploaded the first part of lesson 2 and it is 24 pages long!!! It is packed full of tricks in PSE for altering your shadows on things like string:

elements you want to look like they sit on one paper but stay above the background

or things where you want just a piece to look like it pops up.

While I anticipated them being challenging techniques, they are actually fairly easy to do.

I'm teaching a digital shadows class

Today I wanted to share with you a bit about our upcoming shadows class that I will be teaching. I'm so excited to be teaching this because I think that learning about shadows is probably the best thing you can do to improve your digital scrapbooking. There are many great tricks to the trade out there that will improve different aspects of types of layouts for you, but learning how to use shadows will really bring all of your pages to a completely different level.

The basic outline for our class will be as follows:

Week 1: The basic shadow effect in PSE

Week 2: Altering shadows: erasing, layering, shadow actions

Week 3: Creating your own shadows: new layer, warping

Now, though, let me dig in a bit deeper with you about what will be covered.

During week 1 we will start with the very basics of how to add shadows to your layout. I use screen shots of just about every step it will be super easy to follow even if you are not that familiar with Photoshop Elements. However, for those who already know a bit about shadow use, don't worry - we will not stay at the basic level. I will share with you some tricks for altering the shadows and for duplicating matching shadows onto other layers.

During the second week we will jump past all of the default shadow options in PSE and look at two ways you can customize your shadows even further. First we will look at working on the layout to chance a shadow that you have already put on an element or paper. Then we will look at some shadow actions that are out there and how they work. If you are unfamiliar with actions, you will be happy to know that in our free member section of the forum there is help for installing and organizing your actions.

Finally, on the last week of class we will dive into creating your own shadows from scratch. While I am a bit frustrated by many of the shadow options in PSE there are some work arounds. They can be a bit tricky, but with work I'm sure you can get them. While you won't want to do this level of work for each shadow on your layout, these methods will be wonderful for an element or two that you need to have a unique shadow on.

So that is the class that will be featured for September. I can't believe that it is time already for summer to end and September to start, but alas it is. I scrapped and created a video!

I was so happy to find time to scrap today! I am going back over pictures from 2010 and completing a few layouts that never got done so I can print the rest of my 2010 album. And yes, I know that 2011 2/3 over already, but I'm a bit behind in my scrapbooking. :) So here is the page I made - I just had so much fun creating it.

It was one of those layouts that really took me all morning to create because I'd do a few things and then do something with the kids. While the kids were having snack I could add a few more things, etc. Credits for the layouts are: Template by Cindy Schnider, Better Together by Eva Kipler and Jady Day Studio, Old Typewriter Alpha Bits by Dahlia Co., and brown alpha by Suzy Q Scraps, font is Gayle by Darcy Baldwin

PSE Video Tutorial

I've completed my first Video Tutorial for Digital Scrapbooking Classes! I'm so excited about how it turned out. It is on the options with the move tool in Photoshop Elements.

These layered quick pages make scrapping easy and still personalizable. These pages already have papers and elements in place so all you need to do is add your pictures and text. The elements and papers are in layers, though, so if you want you can also move them around, delete them, or add more however you want.
